Names

French: carrote, Daucus carota

Description

Carrots grow well in all parts of Southeast Texas, are easy to grow and higher quality than store bought ones.

PLanning

Days To Maturity

[Baby] 35-45 days, [Full Size] 50-75 days

Conditions - Soil, Sun, & Water

Full Sun, Well-drained, light soil, free of stones and fresh manure because both will cause the carrots to fork. Needs consistent moisture during germination and first weeks of growth.

Temperatures of Note

Carrots grow well when temperatures are between 60° and 70° and don't grow at all over 80° or below 35-40°. Without protection, they get leaf damage below about 25°

Bed Preparation

  1. Carrots do better if the soil is loose down to 6 inches - loosen soil with a garden fork.
  2. Rake to clear the area from old plants, un-decomposed mulch, and lumps of soil.
  3. Fertilize and lightly scatter seed on the roughened surface aiming at about 1" spacing.
  4. Gently pat the soil so as to assure contact and seed position. Than using a spray nozzle, water the carrot bed thoroughly.

Fertilizer & Soil Amendments

N=high; P=low; K=low

Transplant & Direct Seeding

Directly sow seeds in ground, cannot be transplanted.

Spacing Between Plants & Rows

2 inch spacing in between plants and rows.

Supports & Row Coverings

See below in pest control for lightweight rowcover recommendation.

Bed & Crop Maintenance

Keep the bed damp until the plants are 3" high! This may mean that in hot weather you need to hand water twice a day.

When carrots are 3-5" high, weed the bed and thin plants to at least 2" spacing. Do not skip this step, the effort is well worth it.

Disease & Pest Control

If in previous years you have had nocturnal defoliation from southern armyworm larvae, place a very lightweight rowcover over the entire carrot bed and seal the edges against the dirt. This should prevent the moth from laying eggs and demolishing the crop.

Common Quality Problems

Diseases

White leaf spot is a fungal disease common to Brassicas. remove any diseased plants immediately to prevent disease spread and build-up in the planting location. When present, avoid overhead sprinkler irrigation if possible as this causes water-splash spread which makes the disease worse. Only work in garden beds when leaves are dry to prevent spread of disease through contact with hands, tools or clothing.

Pests

Flea beetles will feed on the leaves which may cause the harvest to be unmarketable. Use row covering protect plants from egg-laying adults.

Additional Information

Improve Yield

Carrots will grow well at two-inch spacings, so 36 carrots can theoretically be grown in one square foot.
